Since ancient
times, Japanese believed in the power of lacquer. Lacquer may irritate
the skin, but for that reason evil stays away. Therefore, Japanese
have used lacquer ware on a daily basis. By layering clear lacquer
over top of black, the deepest black can be achieved. Shikkoku (Black
Lacquer), bottomless darkness, is the most beautiful and dignified
black.
Infinite possibilities abound within the depths of a Shikkoku lacquer.
An inability to see does not mean nothingness. When our sight is blocked,
our other senses are heightened and our experience is deepened. In
this way, we may begin to hear some of the myriad sounds which are
ordinarily inaudible to our ears.
We will keep up the rhythm until we are able to experience those intertwined
colours and patterns ordinarily hidden from us.
